When Tomie was a young boy, he wanted to dance and sing on stage, and write and illustrate books. He has honestly done all those things. Along his path, he studied under Ben Shahn. As I look at Shahn's work, I can see his influence: lines, colors, simplicity, and telling a story in the work of art.
I love Shahn's work, and love dePaola's work even more after seeing the similarities and understanding the craftsmanship behind his illustrations.

The black priest stands out against the other images, just as in Ben Shahn's art. I feel as if Tomie, took Ben's work and translated into an illustration that connected to children. It still tells a story, used the same lines, the colors and shading are incredible, and it has the same minimalist quality of Shahn. A true master at work!
