Outstanding Teachers

An outstanding teacher loves teaching.  In that the teacher is always looking for ways to improve.  They reflect on their teaching and build upon the moments that went well and ask themselves what they could do to make things better.  They are always striving to increase their knowledge and craft.  They improve both their knowledge of teaching as well as the subject.  In addition, they are always teaching.  They use mundane tasks to teach, and continually use think-alouds as a teaching method.

An outstanding teacher loves and knows the students.  They have high expectations for every student.  They scaffold and coach the students to reach these expectations.  They teach the students to self regulate and monitor their own thinking and learning.  Above all, they use the students’ interest as a springboard for further learning and growth.

An outstanding teacher maximizes their time.  They give students many opportunities to read, have excellent classroom management.  They recognize the importance of creating life-long learners.  They use that as their motivating factor in teaching.

What do you think makes an outstanding teacher?

  2. Gary, I totally agree. One who isn't so dedicated to their plans but can read the situation and students to know when it is best to change at a moments notice!

  3. An outstanding teacher is flexible. An outstanding teacher knows that the next day will always be fresh and a new adventure. An outstanding teacher knows that just because he/she put a great deal of time into a lesson plan that it might not necessarily be right for that group of kids...that it's okay to stop and try something different. An outstanding teacher listens. An outstanding teacher allows the students to lead often and guide the discussions. An outstanding teacher collaborates with others and thinks about the good of the whole school, not just the individual classroom. An outstanding teacher communicates with the parents and builds that home-school connection. An outstanding teacher never stops thinking. An outstanding teacher has passion for teaching and loves the students like they are their own.

  4. I loved your second paragraph...self-regulation is so important. I agree that an outstanding teaching also is a great planner but is flexible.

I also think an outstanding teacher has a great sense of humor and takes time for him/herself. Balancing teaching and private life is a challenge but it is important.
