Columbus: Hero or Villain

Image result for christopher columbus

Christopher Columbus set out to find a passage way to the Indies by going west.  The earth was already believed to be round.  But Columbus theorized that the earth was smaller.  There are many qualities I admire about Columbus--his imagination, drive, exploration, tenacity, perseverance, and his navigation.  He was a navigator, explorer, but not a great leader.  This is a short video from Biography about Columbus.

As a short exercise, have your students watch this short video.  Have them find the good and the bad of Christopher Columbus, and then write an opinion paragraph on him.  Something really short.  One paragraph.  It would be a great way to start a debate!

Sorting 3-D Shapes

I still remember one great moment while taking children on a 3-D shape hunt.  We were standing in the hall, and the second grader said, "We are standing in a rectangular prism."  Yes the hallway is a rectangular prism.  Love how she was thinking outside the box of our explanations, while we were standing in a huge box.

This is a fun little sort of 3-D shapes.  I hope it brings to life 3-D shapes for your students as it did for mine.  Maybe, they too, can think outside the box!!!
